CHAPTER EIGHT

Kat left Jessie’s Diner with a belly full of what turned out to be an absolutely delicious pumpkin spice milkshake and a head full of images featuring poker games taking place in smoky back rooms. Her gut was telling her the recent events at Jessie’s Diner were somehow connected to Quentin’s home game. She just didn’t have the first clue as to why or how.

During the drive home she decided she really needed to talk to Hans. The problem was figuring out how to reach him. It didn’t sound as if he had left on good terms with Garden Agog. Regardless, she doubted they would share his contact information, assuming they had it, with a relative stranger. Maybe she could persuade Quentin Pilcher to help her out. Did poker buddies exchange phone numbers? She had no idea.

She was still pondering over her options when she let herself into her apartment. But as soon as she swung the door open, a rhythmic banging chased all thoughts of poker and Jessie’s Diner out of her mind.

She secured the front door and rushed inside, not even bothering to shed her coat along the way. Just as she suspected, there was Matty, once again perched on the kitchen counter, her eyes on the cat cabinet.

Although Matty had her back toward her, Kat was positive the tortoiseshell had heard her come in. Yet that didn’t deter the stubborn creature from continuing on with what she’d been doing. Kat watched as Matty once again reached up and slapped at the cabinet door, this time with a little flair that struck Kat as almost defiant.

“The treats aren’t in there anymore,” Kat told her. “I hid them someplace safe.”

Matty didn’t even deign to turn around and acknowledge Kat’s comment. She had managed to pop the door open a fraction and was now busy slithering through the opening.

With all the stuff crammed inside, Matty couldn’t completely fit onto any of the shelves. She stood on the tippy-toes of her hind feet, the top half of her body hidden behind the cabinet door. Her tail swished back and forth like a clock pendulum.

Kat planted her hands on her hips, prepared to intervene if Matty showed signs of becoming too destructive. But after a minute the tortoiseshell retreated until she once again had all four paws on the kitchen counter. She looked at Kat, her whiskers twitching.

“I told you you wouldn’t find the treats in there,” Kat said.

Matty didn’t seem concerned by this small setback. If the gleam in her eye was any indication, she didn’t plan to stop searching until she found what she was after.

Thinking about Matty’s resolve brought the attacks against Jessie’s Diner back to the forefront of Kat’s mind. Whoever was targeting the restaurant seemed just as determined as Matty to get what they wanted. But what did the culprit actually want? Did they have their sights set on something tangible, or was their only mission to scare Jessie Polanski?

Money seemed like the most obvious and likely motive.
